B.C. government launches its first mobile app, which uses GPS to find health care services

Looking for health services in British Columbia?

There’s an app for that.

Billed as the first official British Columbia government mobile application, the BC Health Services Locator launched Monday on Apple’s iTunes app store.

A mobile version of information that can also be found on HealthLink BC’s website, the Health Services Locator uses GPS to give users information on services in their area.

The services are sorted by type – from walk-in clinics, to hospitals, emergency rooms, immunizations and after-hours pharmacies – and they can be viewed on a map with pins that you tap to get the information. They can also be viewed as a list that includes locations, hours of operation and other data.

The app also links to health alerts – the most recent warns passengers who might have been on a Greyhound bus back in October know that they were exposed to someone with tuberculosis. Users can also call the non-emergency health information and medical advice line 811 straight from the app, which also lists the 24-hour poison-control line.

According to the app’s credits, it was created largely through the volunteer and unpaid efforts of Austin Henry, Derek Sing, Jeff Stewart and Gillian Vrooman.

Although the newly released app is available only for the iPhone, iPod and iPad, Health-Link BC said on its website that the government is exploring other mobile platforms for it.
